How to get data from a external hard drive?
Having a problem with one of my PC (can not boost, just dark screen), I take the hard disk out of the case and connect by an external USB enclosure to another PC. It is shown in Device Manager and Disk Management but not in My Computer.
What can I do to make it presented in My Computer so that I can move my data to other disk? Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Mkae sure the drive jumper pin is set to Master.

Right-click it in disk management and select change drive letter. Give it an available drive letter, then it should show up in my computer.

Thank you for your reply, EzyStvy: Yes, I tried what you suggest. It did not work. About the reading material: I understand from the instruction that I need to see the files in "My computer" before I am able to do anything about it. It's not the case I am having. Thanks for the thought. |

I did what you have suggested, but all the options are gray out except "Delete Partition" (that I absolutely do not want to do) and "Help" (but no help in my situation). I saw that this disk has no assigned drive letter and is FAT32 while others in the same computer are NTFS. Is it the reason ? And how to change it to NTFS without losing any information? Thanks. |

Hi fjfvillarosa:
The version is Windows XP Professional Version 2002. Today, I've slaved it to another older computer. It was shown in Device Manager and Disk Management but not listed in "My Computer". Same thing. This time, all of the hard drive are FAT32 so I guess this FAT and that NTFS is not relevant? Tomorrow I will try to instal it into another computer as a master disk and see what will happen. |

I would not install it as a master - I'd install it as a slave. If you install it as a master it's going to try to boot from it and you don't want that.
You MAY need data recovery software. |
