Incredible deal, but one thing that's wrong on that page - 7200.9 does not use perpendicular recording technology. I confirmed by model number at Seagate's site it's a 7200.9. It *is* 16mb cache though.

...but now that I see the one at Fry's (outpost) I am wondering if I should go ahead and get that one. How much improvement would I notice if I kept with my original plan and got the 320GB perpendicular recording drive over the 400GB non-perpendicular recording one?

I doubt you would really notice any difference except in benchmarks. The .9 is still a pretty fast drive.

Thanks glc for the info. Looks like the price went back up but no biggie. I did some research and this drive goes on sale from time to time at that website but the $99 price tag was the lowest it had reached so far.

I found a forum where people had jumped on this deal last month, $119, and most people were reporting that when they received it, it was a 7200.10 drive in a 7200.9 labled package. Strange. I've never cared for Fry's anyhow so I think I will just grab the 320GB 7200.10 drive at the Egg.

Good stuff! Here in western Canada, I picked up (locally) a Maxtor 200 GB @ 7200 with 8MB cache for $89.00 and thought that was a decent deal too.
Upon looking on the website where I bought this particular HD...it was only for a short time, as I see it's back to it's original $199.00 price tag, so I'm glad I jumped at the deal when I did.

Seems though that hard drive pricing is continuing downward, which is good for all us consumers I suppose.
