You may have the CD drive jumpered incorrectly. If using an 80 wire cable(blue/black/gray connectoers) connect the blue connector to the mobo and the black to the drive. Set the jumper on the CD drive to CS(cable select).

Motherboard model, please - if it's a name brand computer, brand and model, please.
It sounds like you have an old Gateway with the addon Promise Ultra 100 PCI card. When you insert this card, it will knock out the primary IDE controller and you can't do anything about it. You have to use the card for hard drives and the secondary IDE for opticals. |

You need a bios update. This is a known issue, doing so will clear the flags. You also have to install the Promise controller drivers.
Here is a very good FAQ for that motherboard - it DOES have a lot of quirks. http://www.amdmb.com/faq-display.php?FAQ=4 |

Probably, but you are best off getting the file direct from the Asus site. Version 1009 is the latest. You will also need the Aflash 2.21 bios flashing utility, and a bare basic bootable floppy disk with no additional drivers.
Go to support.asus.com, choose downloads, input your board. You will find what you need. Get the bios file, the flash utility, and the Promise controller drivers. |

Interesting results:
Having unzipped Aflash.exe into a new dir of it's own with the BIOS 1009 (this is a fax doc file, is that what is should be?) I moved the unzipped Aflash.exe to a newly formated floppy (no Autoexec nor config on floppy) Booted up on that floppy and got: Remove isk or other media Press any key to restart. Also on second try I got: Invalid system disk Replace the disk, and then press any key. Why so? |

The floppy has to be bootable before you copy the flasher and the bios file to it. If you have a Win9x machine available, just put a floppy in, format it, and issue this command from a DOS prompt:
sys a: XP can create a DOS bootable floppy, but it puts too much stuff on it. You can download driver free disk images for bios flashing from www.bootdisk.com if you have to. The unzipped bios file should be either a .bin or .rom file. |

Detect CD-Rom in DOS but not in Windows.

Interesting encounter
Interesting encounter:
When trying to access a file from the A:\ drive, the CD-Rom and the connected drive (connected via the same cable) lights up and appear to be trying to communicate with each other. Q: Why would they do that? Note: the A:\ drive takes a back seat and don’t even bother to light up. The file in question was a pdf file. |

If you have 2 IDE devices connected to the same cable, use an 80 wire Ultra ATA cable, connect the proper end to the motherboard, connect the master to the other end and the slave to the middle, and jumper BOTH drives CS (cable select).
