Can't install network printer! Help!

I’m trying to install the printer drivers for an HP4200TN laser printer (network ready) on a Dell Laptop running XP Pro. I’ve installed this printer on over 30 network pc’s with no issues. The drivers begin to install from the HP CD and when the progress gets to about 60%, I get an error message indicating “Windows has encountered a serious error” and the process stops. Any ideas?

Have you tried downloaded drivers instead of the CD? You need to check background processes, that laptop may be a candidate for PC Decrapifier.

G,
I did download the drivers from HP, but when I use the “add a printer” method, I get the choice of local printer or network printer (I selected network), then I get the box where you search for the printer in the directory. Windows does not find the printer and I can’t go further. Is there another method I can use? I’ve got the downloaded drivers on the laptop in a directory.

I believe you have to run Setup to get it to go out and find the Jet Direct. The other option is to assign the printer a static IP through its control panel and add a local printer, add port, standard TCP/IP port.

Do you mean run "Setup" from the HP CD?

Yep - either from the HP CD or the unzipped driver package.
