Question Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 or Quad Core QX6700?

Most of you may know about the Core 2 Extreme from Intel, thw X6800 now being the fastest processor in the world. Also, you may know about the new Intel Quad Core processor coming November, boating to be 70% FASTER than the X6800.

I was wondering whether I should wait for the Quad core to come out next month, or purchase the X6800? Of course, the Quad core is going to cost a lot more than the X6800, even though the X6800 will be pretty much emptying my pockets anyway.

Is it worth going for the Quad core QX6700? Do any of you know how much the QX6700 is going to cost?

Personally I think it would be a better idea to wait for the Quad Core to be released even if you still go for the Dual Core.

With the release of Quad Core processors there "MAY" be some movement on the prices of Dual Core chips!

True, true. But I really want the *BEST*. Have intel released the price range for the Quad core processor yet?

many people had asked me for similar question as this; I always say, go ahead BUY the Best you can afford when you need to use it. Because there is always a BETTER CPU, or machine in the future___technology is always improving; something will always be better---count on it.

What will you be doing with the computer? If you're going to be using heavily multi-threaded apps (like some video encoders) then you'll get huge boosts by a quad core (that's probably what that 70% faster benchmark was) or if you'll be running several encoders at once, etc. In other apps or if you won't be doing heavy multitasking, the difference between 2.66Ghz and 2.93GHz won't really be noticable...

I burn around 100 DVDs a week, and it takes hours upon hours to do them all. I really want to be able to do this without having to leave the PC on it's own, so I can just get on with other things. I'm also a hardcore gamer and web designer who demands ultimate performance. I hate the idea of sacrificing vast amounts performance by running multiple applications, I hate being limited.

Yes..quad core..If you really think you'll use it then go for it. The performance in normal 3d/cpu tasks between a conroe is only mediocre. BUT when it comes to video encoding or other programs (only a handful) that will take advantage of such capabilities.
Then yes, it will help.

However Im personally saving my money for when the REAL quad cores come out. These are more of a filler between now and when intel comes out with their redesigned 45nm quad's.

QX/Kentsfield is literally 2 conroes fused together. Nothing too special. It will dump 2x the heat and will drink 2x the juice. And will cost big bucks.

Just warning ya.

You could get an 8 Socket Opteron Board that supports the Opteron Dual Cores and get 8 of the latest Opteron processors. Of course that would be thousands of dollars and suck the juice like nobodys business. Remember, the 'best' is a relative term. And don't forget that AMD is also working on 45 nm and 30 nm tech as well. The main advantage I see in the new technology is that it pushes the other stuff down. I sure hate it when the computer you paid 8000 bucks 6 months ago is now worth half that.

Anandtech.com has a list of motherboards that currently work with Intel Core 2 Duos and are guaranteed to work by the manufacturers (supposedly) with the upcoming Intel Kentsfield Quad cores you are talking about. If you want the computer now, go ahead and build it, but I wouldn't waste the money on the Core 2 Extreme if youre gonna upgrade in 2 months.

Asus has about 8 boards that they say have BIOS versions or will have BIOS versions soon that work with Kenstfield. So if you get like a Core 2 E6400 or something now, that might suit your needs for a bit while not wasting too much money. You can find that article here:
