ip address

I need to run a test, but I need to be able to print to my printer via an ip address.
I don't understand? My printer doesn't have an ip I don't think? I know this can be done as our printers in work have ip addresses. I can print to the unc path and I do have the printer setup on one of the xp machines and I can install it through control panel printers.

however I want to be able to print via ip address.

I should be able to create a standard tcip/ip port within the printers wizard and specify an ip address of the printer.

My problem is what ip address?

Depending on the printer, if it is a direct network printer or using a print server will determine where to enter the IP address.
As for the IP address, if you have a router running as a DHCP server, should be able to take an IP address from it's range of number, just pick the highest number.

First thing to ask is, how exactly is your printer hooked up to your PC? If it's parallel or usb then you can not print to it using an ip address. If it already is hooked up via, a network connection, then it already has an ip adress you can print to, just go to the properties of the particular printer to find what ip address it already using.
