New Hard drive problem
I bought a new 160g W/D hard drive and when I installed it into my computer, a high pitched noise kept ringing and the computer wouldnt even boot.
the moniter would say "no signal" and my laser mouse wouldnt work so I re-installed my previous hard drive to see if the computer is okay, and now my computer is loud and laggy on start up and it restarts by it self. did I do something wrong? what should I do? |

This could be a few different things, when you say it "wont boot" does this mean that you can't get to windows or can't even get to the bios screen? When you were attaching the new hard drive its possible you've knocked the memory loose which may account for some of your woes. It may be worth removivg your memory and reseating it.
The new hard drive should work in your system provided that the operating system supports it, im not certain but i think its only windows xp that will happily support drives of this size, older OS may show up the drive as a lower capacity. Were you replacing the old drive with the new or adding the new as a secondary drive? If you were replacing it have you copied the old drive to it, ie your windows installation? |

It's not just Windows that could be the problem, If the board is old enough the hardware or BIOS might not know how to recognize 160 gigs. But usually it will come up with the drive OK, just not recognize all the space and think it's only a 40 or an 80 gig drive.
Like Stevp said you should go back in the case and check the memory slots and other cards and cables to make sure they did not come loose. |
