Computer Makes sounds everytime I access something
hello,
I was wondering if this was an issue to be of concern... Every time I access something fairly large, say like My Music Folder my hardrive (I am guessing) makes a "Umpphh" sound and sometimes when just doing normal activity such as this (typing) it makes a sound like "tick, tick". Is this something to be worried about... is it something that most hard drives do? Is it something I should upgrade or is it another problem? Thanks |

Ticks and clicks are not usually a good sign. To be safe, download the diagnostic tools from your hard drive manufacturers website and run them.

Ok When I ran the diagnostic tools it said no problem present but even when I hit the start button or run the diagnostic tools you can hear something clearly working inside the computer and I am guessing its the hard drive correct? It makes like a "eehhnn" sound lightly but its predefine hear-able.

Perhaps you should remove the side of the case, run it all, and listen.

might also help to post your complete systems specs especially how old the Hard drive is, manufacturer and model..
the diagnostic tool should pick up problems...you can also try speedfan and pcpitstop for a test www.pcpitstop.com www.almico.com/sfdownload.php install speedfan and then go to "SMART" tab select the drive and it will come back with fitness and performance.post the results here. i know with my laptop it has a hitachi drive and makes clicks and odd noises out side of the normal expected sounds, speedfan reports its losing health so i may need to replace it...

I downloaded the speed fan... Is there any attribute/rating I should specifically look at?
Over all my test results were as follows: The overall fitness for this drive is 88%. The overall performance for this drive is 88%. If my hardrive is fine is there anything else that could be making noise possibly going bad? For instance just when I opened my browser it made noises like it was working hard...? Thanks for the help |

88% isn't that good. 100% is what you should preferably be getting. The SMART test isn't that hard to score high on.
Backup your data as soon as possible, just to be safe

It sounds like the harddrive is on its way out, well that has certainly been my experience of weird and wonderful noises. As suggested you should certainly get your data backed up. If it were me i'd start shopping for a new harddrive too. Ive seen problems like that that carry on working fine for months but its quite possible it will die in the near future

If my hard drive is on its way out is that of any sign that another part of my pc is going bad or s hould be upgraded?
The computer is about a year old... what could cause it to already have a troubled hard drive |

Also if I went with a new hard drive what is the main specs I should look at? Speed, Cache, Size? what do you all recommend... I use my pc mainly for photo editing and web design. I currently have about 1000 songs on my pc so I use it for some music and gaming.
Also is there anyway of purchasing a new hardrive like 70 GB but with 10,000 speed and then used my old hardrive (thats acting up) as to save allmy documents... I dont know which i should go with. I tersted my hard drive again last night and it was rated 91%. Is that certain that my hard drive is going out? Anyway to repair? This my current MOBO MSI K8N Neo4-F Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 ATX AMD... so if that is my mobo would I have to stick with a ATA 100 format Drive? SO I couldnt even get a 10,000 speed drive, correct? What drive do you recommend going with for about 150? Also is it best to upgrade my mobo, or no? could that be goin out? Last edited by lokodezine; 11-27-2006 at 10:15 AM. |

Could go to a SATA drive like the Seagate 7200.10. What you could do is get the Seagate and set that up as the boot drive and if there is warranty left on the old one, RMA it and use the replacement as a spare storage drive.
Drives generally die on their own, no need to upgrade anything.

You won't get a warranty replacement unless it does die or fail manufacturer's diagnostics. It may only need a zero fill and fresh reinstall, file corruption can cause a lot of seek noises. Try running chkdsk /r on it.
