CPU Fans

Could someone give me their intake on which is the best Intel CPU fan to use other than the Intel fans? I have one MassCool fan and need 2 more.. thanks.

Also, would there be any good instructions on how to apply the Arctic Thermal Grease anywhere in here?

Which socket type? Socket 478 or LGA775?

What are you looking for? A quiet heatsink or one that cools really well?

Do you have a budget?

Need one 478 and one 775... thanks

Yes. As close to free as I can get it ..lol

It will be used on a Celeron D 3.6 and a Pentium 4 3.0... No gaming or anything - just downloading music and surfing the net

I have a new MassCool 775 fan and need another and need one for a 478 socket also.

If you're looking for budget heatsinks I think MassCool is as good as any other budget brand.

If you want premium heatsinks then that's another matter...and way more costly.

Since the P4s naturally run hot you may want to invest in a not top quality, but still decent cooling device. Arctic Cooling seems to make good, cheap ones.

Will the 775 and 478 socket heatsinks fit one another or do you have to purchase to fit??

They are not interchangable...you'll have to purchase the correct heatsink for each socket type.

Whatever brand you wind up getting, make sure that you use a Copper Core Heatsink instead of an aluminum core heatsink. Copper is much better at Heat Transfer than Aluminum is.

Actually, both materials have their good points and bad points.

Copper is better at taking heat away from the CPU but it doesn't release the heat to atmosphere as quickly as aluminum so you generally need a more powerful fan with full copper heatsinks.

Aluminum releases heat to atmosphere quicker than copper and can use a less powerful fan for quieter operation, but it doesn't take heat away from the CPU as well as copper does.

So the best of both worlds seems to be a heatsink with a copper contact patch and aluminum fins.

Point taken.. Which explains why my CPU heatsink fins are Aluminum and the Core in the middle is made of copper.

thanks all. Been reading about the original intel heatsinks they use and think I will just use what Intel Uses with their processors.. If you think differently please tell me. here's a link to a evaluation of these heatsinks..

For a socket 478 Celeron, could use just about any low cost HSU. I used a $12 HSU on a Celeron folding box, no heat issues.
For the 775, probably will want at least the same grade or better as the Intel HSU.

I'm looking at the original Intel HSU's for the Pentium 478 - and the 775 Pentium 4 and the Celeron D. They will be around 15.00 ea with shipping. They are the Extrusion aluminum with the copper core. Heck. I figure if Intel uses them - they gotta be ok. For what I will use the puter for I probably don't even need any case fans.. lol . . thanks.

I have been using a Gateway P-3 with a 20gig harddrive and I'm happy with it as long as the cablespeed stays put. I'm sure I will appreciate the upgrade tho. When I go to download music I can barely move around the boards.

If I feel like I can't handle this build - What a nominal charge to have a tech put one together?

Unless you are overclocking or performing torture tests, the INTEL Heatsink-Fan assemblies are fine.

I took the impression that he didn't have the original stock units.
