Question O/Cing a C2D Build

Well im workin on a c2d build and i was wondering if there were any good threads on overclocking. im completly new to overclocking and i cant find anything on overclocking a C2D. Here are my Spec's

Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 Conroe 1.86GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80557E6300 - Retail

ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler - Retail

You've got to be nuts!...Or extremely wealthy.

Seriously though, if your new to overclocking I wouldn't start learning on my c2d. Overclocking stresses components, and puts them at risk of failure. I'm not trying to be a PIA, but if you have the cash to replace your E6300 Conroe, P5B, and or Video card- return the 6300 and get the 6600. Then be happy.

Look at the stickies. There are PLENTY. Just follow redfallon's to get started.

If you get stuck we can help you from there.

Its very unreasonable to ask somebody to go through step by step through this. Its called tweaking for a reason .

There are a few things new with core 2 duo that might encounter, and you can ask your questions here, we'll be more then happy to help.

But you need to take initiative yourself...

alright ill check through red's again, just wondering if C2D is much different than other pentiums. But if O/cing em is relatively close ill go with that.

and no i highly doubt i will ruin something.

Overclocking a C2D is done in much the same way as a P4...you raise the FSB speed a little at a time until the system gets unstable or unable to boot and then you take it back down a few notches.

Learn how to clear the CMOS on your motherboard...you'll be doing that a lot.

And I don't think a AMS power supply (even a 550 watt) is a good choice to overclock with.

read the definative guide...overclocking a C2D is alot like AMD64 withouth the LDT stuff...

Learn about ram dividers and all...hands on is the best way... spend the most time learning the ram limits and you're pretty good to go...

I just finished my build last night almost exactly the same as yours with a different video card and PSU/Case. Ohh and I got OCZ memory instead of the Corsair.

Anyway, I figured I would try take it right on up to 400 x 7 but the system didn't post. It just hung up. I had to clear the CMOS a few times. I thought for sure it would go to 400. Maybe I need to up the voltage a little.

Any suggestions on voltage boosts or something I may be doing wrong?

Here is what I got:

Intel E6300
Asus P5B
OCZ PC2 6400 (800MHz) 5-4-5-15
EVGA 7900GS KO
Seagate 7200.10 320GB
Antec Solo
Antec True Blue 2.0 PSU 480W

jk its totally okay its good to hear about people in the same situation as me, cause we can learn from each others stupid ass blunders. I was thinking about the p5b but i read alot of review on O/Cing it and found that there were some other ones that didnt heat up as much. BTW jeff what are u trying to O/C to. I am shooting for 3.4-3.5 but if i can stable higher ill do that... O yeah an jeff what CPU cooler are u gonna use? i gots teh big typhoon

Is the OCZ ram good 4 overclocking cause i was looking at it before? Also, is 4-4-4-12 much different the 4-5-4-15? I mean if ur increasin that neway... (.Y.)

As for Cricket yeah i am now going with the Enhance 500w.

And btw i wont have the system done for a while cause my GPU wont be here till Christmas i just wanna know how to do it so when the time comes ill be a pro.

So, for my first increase in fsb what should i shoot for? And is 5mhz a good increment to go up each time. And finally, my memory (listed above) runs at what speed? i think i got the basics down thanks to Red's guide but im still lil confused on how much i should go up each time.

Also, once i get all my parts, would it be a good idea to practice O/Cing on my current build so i can get a grip on it.

Joking or not, that type of language isn't allowed here, CPD. I removed it but I'm sure you know what I'm refering to.

I'm not shooting for that much. I'm going for 2.8GHz which should be no sweat for this system from what I hear. I'm trying to get my FSB to 400 while leaving the multiplier at 7. I'm sure all my gear should handle that no problem.

I'm also using the Arctic Freezer 7 pro for cooling and it seems to do a good job. The OCZ memory seemed to get great reviews as well and it was much cheaper then the Corsair so I went with that. I'm running the CPU at 2.1 right now without issues but I need to get back in there and tinker more.

^Please read the stickies.

Ocing doesnt envolve a simple step of pushing whatever FSB number you want and have it magically come to form.
