My PC hangs when I insert a CD in my DVD writer

Help! My PC freezes/hangs (keyboard, mouse won't does not respond) everytime I insert a CD in my LITEON DVD Writer, but it works perfectly well on DVDs. In order for it to read CDs, the CD has to be in the tray when I start windows. I have already loaded the drivers (VIA IDE controller) needed for it to run.

I have a ECS PT880 Pro-A motherboard, Pentium D 805, 512 DDR2 Ram, Seagate SATA 80 gig hd, Windows XP SP2, LITEON DVD Writer, LG CD ROM, and an old Fujitsu 6 gig HD.

Thanks for your much needed suggestions.

Why don't you just use the LG CD ROM drive for CDs? Why are you trying to insert a CD in the DVD drive in the first place when you already have a CD drive?

When we buy a product, and it says that you can play CDs in it, it should. Or else you didn't get your money's worth. It shouldn't matter if you have a separate CD drive or not.

Which model writer do you have? and what is the firmware installed on it. There are some firmware updates that say they are to "match more media".

Thanks nokiafan. I tried that but when I installed it, it said that I already have the latest driver.

Its a LITEON DVDRW SOWH-1673S.

I already downloaded the firmware from the liteon website for the exact model but it still doesn't work properly.

I believe the CD and DVD readers are separate in these types of drives. Quite possible your CD reader is defective. Try the drive on another pc and if the problem persists, return or replace the drive.

I have it set up as a slave and the master is the CD Rom both in one IDE slot.

I have the 6 gig HD on the other IDE slot as a master.

I use a 40 pin cable.

I don't think its defective. It started when I reformatted my hard drive and re-installed windows. Well, to make sure, I'll have it checked by the vendor.

Open up the properties of the IDE controllers in device manager and make sure it's running in DMA mode, not PIO.

Thanks for all your suggestions guys. I did most of them. But I just solved the problem.

I uninstalled Nero Suite from my computer and my DVD Writer is working as it should again.

Why is it so??

Now, how do I burn CDs???
