Question Busted Laptop Monitor/make it work with a PC monitor

I have a Toshiba A15-S157 laptop with a busted monitor and have tried hooking my laptop to a PC monitor but it doesnt seem to be working. The screen with the black background with the words "Windows XP Home Edition" and the green loading bar underneath does show up but then the monitor goes to black and goes into standby mode. When I try to turn the monitor off and on again the message "Cable disconected or Unable to recieve signal" pops up for about 3 seconds before the monitor goes blank again.
I am pretty sure the cables are connected properly so whats up with this "Unable to recieve signal" message?

check in the BIOS for some option for the video output to be switched to the video connector as primary

You should also be able to switch from LCD to VGA with a Fn key. Dig out the manual and/or look at the blue writing on the F-keys.

If that doesnt work try booting into safe mode. The display should come up then allowing you set it for a crt instead of the lcd.

If the monitor(LCD lid) is closed when you try and boot up that could also be pushing the laptop to sleep mode.
