Did my power supply just die?

Hiya guys
Think I'm gonna cry
I finished my new build yesterday:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ AM2
Abit Fatal1ty AN9 32X AM2
Corsair TWIN2X1024-6400C4 DDR2-800 1GB Kit
Leadtek PX 8800GTS
Western Digital Caviar SE 250GB 7200RPM 8MB SATAII

Thermaltake Toughpower 650w PSU

PC was working fine untill this morning, I had been playing quake 4 untill the early hours, decided to do some windows updates. After installing the updates it asked for a system restart so I clicked ok and left the room.

I returned to the room a short while later to find the pc switched off, I try to turn it on and nothing, no fans spinning and no power led on the motherboard.
Since there is no power light on the motherboard I thought must be the PSU, I got it out and did the paper clip trick and still nothing.

I had the PC plugged into a surge protector and everything else seems fine. VERY SAD
I thought that PSU would be more than enough to power the PC. I'm very worried about the rest of the components, I can't afford to replace anything. This is my dream PC and the dream has just been shattered.
I plugged the paper clip into the green wire hole and one of the blacks as the manual said, I take it that because the PSU fan does not come on when I switch it on that it is dead.

I want to find out if it will still turn on but I doubt any of my local computer shops will stock ATX 2.2 PSUs above 400w

I got run over by a truck on my bike a few months ago and nearly lost my life and now this... somebody up there really doesn't like me.

What do you guys think? Is my motherboard dead? my PSU? my $1000 vid card?? :S please put me at ease.

It's a stupid question, and I don't assume you are a stupid person, but is everything else on the surge protector still on?

Otherwise, probably the psu is dead.

I am not an expert.

Buy another psu and send Him the bill.

If you feel industrious and have another psu in the house, just unplug any extra HDDs and whatever else (use onboard video if you have it) and try the other psu.

Power Supply has been confirmed as dead by the local PC shops testing device.
Anyone with experience of blowing up PSUs know the chances of my other components being harmed? If they are who is held responsible? Does that model have protection in place? I've been playing around with PCs for 6 years and I'm A+ and MSCE certified so that should help my case if the other parts were harmed. I'm waiting untill monday to phone the people I ordered it from and explain the situation. The PC shop I visited gets his parts from the same supplier and said that they will send me a new one before I have sent the Dud off allthough I don't have much confidence in Thermaltake PSUs anymore :P The thing didnt even last 12 hours Hope that it was just a rare occurance. I did notice inside the PSU is a piece of cheap looking plastic that it seems is there to help force cold airflow past the components, The plastic appears to be broken in places so I'm suspecting some of that broken plastic has got somewhere it shouldnt have.

The toughpower, despite crapping out on you, is in theory a 'quality' unit. It has good specs and, most importantly in your case, over voltage protection. When cheapo units die, they often feed the components voltages that are wayyy off spec - and this is what fries them. This shouldn't have happened with the Thermaltake, though you can never be 100% sure.

I recently had a 'Hiper' power supply die on me, which is probably of similar quality to the thermaltake. No damaged components here, so hopefully the same will apply to you.

That's the difference between quality power supplies and cheap ones, all may run your system,it's when they die quality pays off.
That power supply should still be under warranty, get a rma from place of purchase or from Thermaltake, one of them will send you a new one.

Very odd. But even the best psu's can have issues. Actually the Toughpower is the only thermaltake PSU I would personally recommend for a high end gaming or SLi rig.

I take this as a another case of bad quality control at CWT or Channel Well (the people who make the toughpowers).

They had recently developed a horrible reputation with their Antec sourced powersupplies.
The capacitors were just barbecueing themselves and blowing up .

However on the toughpowers they used a much higher quality internal design and components. Ignoring the quality flaws, the design itself of CWT made powersupplies actually rivals some of the best on the market.

Thermaltake will replace the power supply, but consequential damage to other components is not covered under warranty.
