Disk read error. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to reboot.

... that is the error message I get from my PC when I try and boot up. It shows on the screen after the memory check.

I know this is very vague, but what should I do? Maybe you could list some things to check, that'd be great.

Thanks,

Chris

EDIT: I tried to completely format with Killdisk, but it tells me there is an issue with the A: drive. (Bad CRC, which I'm presuming to stand for Cyclic Redundancy Check.)

What's the history behind the problem?

Is it a new build?
Did you wake up one day and turn on your trusty ol pc and get this error?

The CRC error is probably from a bad download. Try again.

I turned it on at 5:00am this morning, booted fine, looked ok...

Didn't do anything, my bro had turned the internet off and it was on his room so I switched it off... and when I came back it was like that.

It did give me a CRC error for one of my downloads a week or two ago, but I thought nothing of it and deleted them from index.

Most likely a hard drive failure.

So what would the general fix be?

Replace the drive would be your only fix if its dead.

Determine the brand of hard drive and download the diagnostics from the manufacturer's website. If your floppy drive is dead, then get the CD .iso version. Run the tests, if the drive fails, start shopping for a new drive.

It's a Maxtor. I've downloaded the diags, and tried both CD and floppy...

If I try and load the floppy version, it gives me the (bad CRC) error.

If I try the CD it says:

"Boot from CD...
Press any key to boot from CD..."

So I press a key, and the screen goes blank. I left it on for a while to see if it was just ultra-slow, but it still hadn't loaded after 4 hours.

... so what would that suggest?

You could try hooking up the drive in another pc and see if you can format it there.
