Lite-On DVD Writer I/O errors

Normally I can figure things out and solve them, but this one has me stumped. Occasionally my DVD drive will not read what is on a CD, the most common being an "I/O error. This most frequently has shown up as I try to "copy" programs saved on CD and "paste them in files in my new rig. Small programs or files (up to several Mb- no problem. Something large like 3dMark '06 however, go so far as to lock up my whole system. This is something I always used to be able to do before. Is there some setting I am missing? I checked all the connections first to make sure they are seated firm. Also, the DVD drive is screwed in tight, so it's not vibration causing the laser to have trouble reading the tracks. Any ideas? thanks in advance

Can you repeat the error on demand? Meaning you get the error...You pop the cd out and maybe reboot and then try the copy process again...

It's possible a spec of dust on either the drive or the cd could cause this.

Angry Fire

Actually, it seems to be only with CD's I made with my last computer. This is a DVD drive that does DL also, and runs alot faster. Is it perhaps just more particular about what brand is used? With all things like games and other pre-recorded installation programs it seems to be doing fine, although initially I got a whole slew of errors when I tried to install windows, both "I/O" errors and "dll not found" errors. I initially had to reistall windows and then I still had to do a Repair installation on windows after the Reinstall. Now everything is fine except for this occasional issue. Last night I tried to copy my saved "My Documents" contents, and it took 5 tries before I got it all loaded, it would always find something to hang up on.

The relative laser alignments between the 2 drives are slightly different.

Ohhhh... so that's it! So, I guess I can either put in my old DVD drive, or after I FINALLY get all my old CD's copied onto my new computer, make new cd/dvd backups. Thanks alot, I feel alot better about the whole thing now.

Issue Solved. It was an issue with the still new (which really means "beta"- lol) drivers for the 8800gtx. They are junk, and were throwing everything off. Since replacing the NVIDIA driver (which wasn't windows certified anyway), with a modified one I found on Guru 3-d, My whole system has been completely stable. Don't know if they are related, but with computers it's likely. Thanks for the help!!
