iPod / iTunes question
Bought a couple of new iPods for family for Xmas and have a question before I unpack them for a trial run.
Can you download mp3 and .jpg pix to these using windows explorer or do you have to use the iTunes software to put the files on the iPods? If you have to use the iTunes software, has anyone else had problems with the iTunes 7.0.2 and WinXP. I installed it this morning and get between 1 and 7 mouse clicks in the software before my system totally freezes up and I have to do a hard restart. Uninstalled the iTunes and everything is back to normal. Did a Google search and seems that I am not the only one with this problem. Am hoping that I can just Drag & Drop with Explorer but some say it won't work this way. |

i have never heard getting song on to an ipod with out itunes. so from my knowlodge you have to use itunes. but if u have multiple ipods then i think u need to set a different user account for each ipod. so just make a different user account on xp for each member of ur family and then each ipod will go with that a user account.
try to reinstall itunes or u can go to their website and get the latest version and it should work. |

winamp versions 5.2 and higher support the ipod, and there is a plug-in called mlipod that gives you even more features.

Winamp seems to be a good download TO the iPod, but, can it also delete from the iPod if you want a different playlist installed? Also, it did not look like it would handle the .jpg pictures. |

yea, you can remove files from the ipod from within winamp, but i am not sure about the .jpg handling. i never had a use for that. i ended up switching back to itunes when i got my video ipod because it works the best for handling videos

No they dont handle jPeg, when they are synced using iTunes they convert into a different format (compressed) that the ipod will understand, itunes will convert jpegs to that format...

Thanks for the info about iTunes, etc..
Have uninstalled / reinstalled, tweaked, held my mouth just right and it has not been locking up quite as much as it had previously, but still is not stable in the system. Current plan is to test it some more this week and if it continues to lock up the system, will return the iPod Nano's, as I would have to use iTunes for the picture transfer and keep the Gen2 Shuffles as I can use other Windows based software WinAmp or mediamonkey to transfer music files to it. |

If iTunes 6 is compatible with those iPods, try that.

Several people have said in private emails and in a forum that I found last night, that the 6.X.X versions are not compatible with the Gen 2 iPods, only the 7.X.X series. Seems that the Gen2 iPods have a different firmware than the "Gen 1" units. Can't confirm this though.
