The new noob has a question...

Hi, I’m a new member and this will be my first post. I was looking to upgrade to DDR2 ram for the holidays. I currently have a 3200+ 939-socket processor and to save money I was looking to transfer my current processor to the new motherboard, although the only AMD motherboards I can find with DDR2 slots are AM2-socket. So my question is; will my 939-socket processor work in the AM2-socket motherboards?

nope...

AM2's are a different socket...and are not compatable with what you have... to use ddr2 you will need a new board and cpu...

if you are going to go that route go C2D...( I cant believe I say that..)

it's more economical as well as more cost effective amd AM2 just doesnt perform as well as it should... for the time being you may be better off just getting a better cpu for your current rig...?

Oh yea.... Welcome to PcMech...

thanks, so my next question is how much better is DDR2 than DDR? I have 2bg ram on my pc right now, would it be better to upgrade the ram or the processer (3200 amd currently)?

that depends which way you go if you go ddr2....if you go the AM2 route...none... even being the ram is twice as fast the platform doesnt realize it and there is no performance gain... atleast not enough to justify... you'd be better off getting a 3700 cpu or better... a 4800 dual core and you'd still be set for a while...

Now if you did the ddr2 and went C2D you'd get that performance gain... but at a higher cost that if you just stuffed a 4800 in your current rig....

That would be the most economical way to go...a 3200 is a good performer but there is so much more left in the line.... watch the sales a catch a deal on a faster cpu go with that and save for a new build for next X-mas...
