Digital Camera for under $200

Hi all,

My sister is looking to buy a digital camera for an upcoming trip overseas. Her budgest is $150-200, so I don't think that gives us a whole lot of choice. Does anyone have any good suggestions in this pricerange? Optical zoom is definitely a must -- I know some of the cheapy cameras have digital zoom onl. Thanks in advance for your help.

How about this one? I have an A610 which I really like. I assume this one is pretty good too.

I don't see where you can get any better in that price range.

both my mother and sister have kodaks and they absolutely love them. they are the type of people that just want a simple point and shoot with essentially no options beyond the most basic ones. if your sister is the same way, you may want to consider Kodak, because they are so simple

5x Optical Zoom, 8 megapixels, Free 1GB SD card and case. only downside is the batteries, but one reviewer said rechargeable ones work fine

Thanks guys. hobey, you make a good point. My sister certainly doesn't need advanced photo shooting options in a camera. Considering that you can get the whole package, camera, case and sdcard for less than $200 is a pretty good deal. Do the Kodacs work fine with Mac's btw? TIA.

according to Kodak's site, there does appear to be Mac drivers on the disc, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks again Craig. I'll show her this one and a couple others and let her make a decision from there.

From what I have seen Canons generally have the best image quality of all the point-and-shoots anyway.

Thanks guys. What would be your recommendation for a good point and shoot in the $250-$300 range? Thanks again.

Probably also a Canon of some sort. I am not sure what is available in there but the SD series is in general pretty good. Canon makes the best point and shoots across the board pretty much -- the only time to get anything else is if you are really on a budget or you're looking at a hybrid P&S/prosumer.

Canon a630 is $250. Everywhere I've read about it gave it great reviews. I'm getting it for christmas. It's basically an upgrade of what you already have, 8 MP with a big screen that flips out and swivels.
