Booting up noise
Recently, when booting up or coming out of standby, there are two grinding sounds one right after the other, maybe 4 or 5 seconds each.... as if it is struggling. Other than a few odds and ends problems which someone here always knows how to fix... ))))))))) Does anyone know what the grinding sound means? I built the machine over a year ago and this is what is in it.... can't keep from thinking something is about to die on me:
Asus MB P4P800-VM Pentium 4/2.26GHz Western Digital HD 80Gig 1 gig memory Crucial Samsung DVD/CD combo Much thanks and appreciation for your assistance! |

Have you opened your case and attempted to determine the source of the sound?

Sounds like the floppy drive is seeking to me. Does the floppy light come on when the noises occur?

Thanks, guys, after booting up twice and paying close attention after reading your responses... does it make sense the noise is coming from my monitor? Compaq Presario, 19", weighs a ton...

CRT monitors can make clicking sounds during boot up since the different boot screens are at different resolutions. I have an old 17" that clicks as it changes resolutions at the different screens.

The grinding sound this is making is not even close to a clicking sound. I know the sound you are talking about, though. The noise I'm calling grinding can also be described as the deep beginnings of a dog growling, but, it's from a machine.... I do not have a pet. ))))))

Could be the High voltage transformer in the monitor is going bad. when the monitor changes resolutions, you have a change of high voltage. Your monitor is probably in the 4 to 6 years of age I would guess.
