Is this HDD not recoverable?

My Hitachi 250GB SATA HDD was working fine, but ever since a few days ago I heard this clicking sound during booting, but didn't seem to affect anything and Windows/programs worked fine. But the last time the clicking sound never stopped, and Windows log-on screen didn't come up, instead the BSOD came up, saying some file is corrupt. I rebooted the system, and clicking sound kept on for 5 minutes or so, and then it says to load boot disc/choose a device to boot. Apparently the HDD can't get to the booting process, and can't load or read data. I tried to boot it using the Windows OS disc to no avail. It says S.M.A.R.T failure. I couldn't believe the HDD would just die on me all of a sudden. I replaced the HDD with a WD 250 SATA HDD, and the system is working now. But can I recover the data in the old HDD? Or is it gone?

I had that same issue with an 80 gig IDE Hitachi. I just stopped using it for about a week and then transferred all of my data off of it. The problem would only appear after some time, so I acted fast and got the job done.

I have installed the faulty HDD to the system and booted up with the replaced HDD and tried to see if I could recover any data, well the faulty HDD is not showing up in disk management. I checked the bios and it is detected, and SATA enabled. So is this it? I can't salvage any data?

Did you try that pcinspector software that glc mentioned?

If that doesn't work, most tech shops will have the equipment to clone the drive.
