cpu's

Ok, after looking at cpu's I have a question. for LGA 775 cpu's what makes the core 2 duo so much faster? Lets say compared to an Intel Pentium D

Intel Pentium D 945 Presler 3.4GHz 2 x 2MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor

Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 Conroe 1.86GHz 2M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor

both are 64bit
both are 65nm
both are dual-core
the L1 & L2 cache are pretty close
the core 2 duo is 1066MHz FSB while the Pentium D is 800MHz
but the Pentium D is 3.4GHz while the core 2 duo is 1.86GHz

really the only thing I see different is the multimedia instruction on the core 2 duo has
SSE4 & EM64T and also 'virtualization technology support (whatever that is) which the pentium D doesnt, that and a little higher FSB speed

so does that make the core 2 duo that much faster, even though the pentium D is clocked almost twice as fast (3.4GHz compared to 1.86GHz)

my last cpu was an Athlon XP
so Im sure either one of the above cpu's would seem very fast compared to what I'm used to, but I just want to make sure that later I dont wish I would of paid a little more to get something much better, or even worse wish I would of paid half of what I did and have almost the same thing

The core duo is more powerfull it has to do with how it proccesses calculations or some mumbo jumbo and it can over clock its ass off. That chip was completly redid so it has the latest advances in it where the the d was off the older p4 model. At stock speeds they might run neck and neck but they will both be good. Someone with more technianl knowledge might give you a better answer but I gave a shot.

Clock speed has become meaningless across architectures. Your Athlon XP is an example of this - the actual clock speed is lower than the "rating". The C2D's architecture is the most efficient yet. The E6300 should hold its own with AMD's rated in the 4000's and the high end Pentium D's. It's simply the best performing $190 processor out there. If you have more money to spend, get the E6600.

ok, cause one of the top pentium D is the same price as the E6300 $189

Hears another question, in the past I've had very good luck with winXP being installed on a hard drive and being able to move it from one system to another. what do you think my chances are of being able to do this time, lol from amd to intel, different chipsets, from 32bit to 64bit
I'm still going to give it a shot, I have my SATA drive partitioned in to sections, one that has my current system as it is now on it, the other half is empty ready to have xp installed on it, in case it doesnt work

the E6600 does look nice, but even now it's been a couple days since I mentioned to my other half that I was going to be upgrading and she's still yelling at me about spending way to much money, good thing I'm giving my old system (mb & cpu at least) to her daughter.
I guess there's a limit on how much I can spend on me

As others have said, without a doubt take the Core 2 Duo over any Pentium D. It is sort of like new technology versus old technology, and the *newer* technology simply outperforms the older technology. The Core 2 Duos outperform the Pentium Ds because they their core architecture in short allows them to do a whole lot more with the clock.

yea I will get a core 2 duo, but it's going to be the E6300
at newegg they have been dropping the price by $1 every other day, its down to $188 now
I was just kind of waiting to see if they dropped it anymore.

It's not going to drop significantly until the E6320 is introduced.
