VGA to DVI dilema

Here is my situation. I have a computer and and Xbox 360. I both want to display through my moniter. Both run through VGA input.

My moniter has one VGA input, and one DVI input. I fugure instead of switching the cables, i'll get a converter to switch VGA and DVI and then have them both hooked up.

Well, i recently bought a VGA to DVI converter for my computer. it's a little piece that sitcks out of the back of the computer. I then used a DVI cable to run to my moniter. Problem solved?

Nope, while the moniter reconzies that there is a cable in there, it does not display the computer. I don't understand what could be going wrong here.

I am using a slightly older Dell Desktop Computer. It has no graphics card. It has an intergrated graphics. My moniter is a Samsung Syncmaster 940b The piece i am using looks exactly like this:

Does anyone know the problem? Or a possible solution? VGA Switches are expensive, so keep in mind i'd like to keep cost down. Thank you for any input!

In spite of what you may read, you cannot use a VGA output on a video card to drive a DVI input on a monitor with an adapter. You need a VGA switch.

Darn, if GLC says it true, it must be true. A switch I must get.

Side note, why would anyone even need the piece I have? Seems totally useless.

That adapter is a DVI to VGA and is to be used with a VGA extension cable that has female on one end and male on the other. Very uncommon to do it this way.
