Laptop Hard Drive issues

So i have this Alienware Laptop. 3.2 Ghz 2 GB memory, a powerhouse. Have had it for a good while and I just recently did a registry clean, restarted the computer and it would not load the OS. Windows XP Pro. It would want me to connect an ethernet cord to the Internet and attempt to do something involving ReAltech. So i decided i had to reinstall windows upon re-partitioning the hard drive and beginning the installation sequence, i get this message saying it cannot install the OS the hard drive might be damaged. Do you believe this is the case and I must invest in a new hard drive? Every time i listened to the hard drive I heard a lot of painful sounds and to me it didn't sound healthy. PLease Help.

Have you tried the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic disk to check the drive.

If you can't determine the brand of hard drive, Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test can test any brand.
