External DVD burner problem
I have a comstar external DVD+R/-R burner connected to the computer shown in my signiture using Windows XP Pro. I came home the one day and the burner isn't getting power and the computer doesn't see the drive. the fan doesn't spin. I tried using different outlets and such but no luck. Any ideas?
Any help would be appreicated.

Sounds like a dead PSU.
Check the amperage rating on the PSU and then check around your house for a comparable PSU from an old cordless phone or something similar, you never know you might find something. When the PSU on my external harddrive went phut I used the PSU off an old zip drive until WD replaced the PSU under warranty

the power cable is a multiple pin connected and when it's plugged in, the psu in the middle of the cable light is on. so the cable is getting power.

I would still try a replacement PSU, it may not be supplying enough power.

Another way to check or verify if your external burner's adaptor or PSU is dead, is to use a digital multitester. Check the DC voltage output. It should match the nameplate rating of your adaptor. If it doesn't, or if you don't get any reading from your multitester, then your adaptor needs replacement or if not somewhere in the adaptor's cord is somehow broken.
rjfvillarosa has a good suggestion, but make sure to check the polarity of the replacement PSU before plugging in. |

I have a feeling that it is a dead PSU. I'm going to test the drive itself tomorrow to make sure that it's not the drive. if it is the PSU, where can I get a replacement. Been having a difficult time finding one. Maybe I've just not been looking hard enough. if worse comes to worse I can get a 5.25 enclosure for it. Thanks for all the help so far.

Personally I find the place a little expensive but I suppose the quickest place to get one would be RadioShack, check what output voltage and amperage is on the label of yours and then search it on the RadioShack site to give you an idea of cost.

If you do open the enclosure, you will find a standard IDE drive in it - test it on an IDE cable before you conclude the adapter or housing is bad.
