Unhappy Help...Blue Screen Of Death Error

Hii..I've never done this stuff before but I need some help.

My computer was acting very slow so I shut it down normally like I always do. When it started back up I got a screen that said:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Disable or uninstall any anti-virus disk defragmentation or back up utilities. Check your hard drive confiuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption , and then restart your computer.

Techinical Information:
***Stop: 0x00000024 (0x001901FE, 0x812DHCA0, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000)"

I tried restarting because I have never seen that before and the screen came back. I tried starting in safe mode and it took me back to that screen. I tried in safe mode command prom. and it went back to that screen. And I tried going back to the last safe configuration and it didnt work either. I have no idea how to get back this screen, or what could possibly be wrong.
Can someone help?
Lost girl.

I'm looking for someone that can help walk me through this problem, or send me to someone who can.

She has never tested the ram before. I know her personally and referred her here. She has never tested the computer with anything.

Her computer recently had problems so I suggested that she download spybot. She did, and I think it solved her problem temporarily. Just a few days after she noticed her computer behaving really slow and now turned her computer off only to see that it won't boot back up properly.

I personally think the error has something to do with the power supply. She lives in an older house with pretty buggy electrical wiring and I think that the power supply must have not received enough power or perhaps was surged.

I think that is the case because (even though the power supply may not be doomed) I think this is a hard drive related error as well.

***
Would it make sense that the power supply pin connector to the hard drive was fried?
***

She can't run normal safe mode, prompt safe mode, or network safe mode, so I think the computer can't read the hard drive anymore.

any help would be greatly appreciated

I have just searched the stop code you posted and got no results.
Can you tell me if your machine is a custom built or branded shop bought machine? what operating system does it have? and is it fitted with a floppy disk drive?

She has a Dell Dimension 2300 computer with XP service pack one I think. The computer DOES have a floppy disk drive. I don't see how a floppy would be useful unless you were to flash the bios... which I think is unrelated to this problem but I can't say for certain.

She has looked up what the "stop" error means and told me that this is what she found

"This Stop error indicates that a problem occurred within Ntfs.sys, the driver file that allows the system to read and write to drives formatted with the NTFS file system"

I personaly find it easier to run harddrive diagnostics and memtest from a floppy, can you see what colour the status lights are on the back of the machine?

well don't you have to be in at least dos to run those?

She can't get anywhere on the computer. It gives her the blue screen no matter what option she chooses. She can't go into any safe mode option OR run the "last known setting that worked" or w/e windows says.

I'm thinking that the psu connector to the HDD might be swapped with another one?... it's got a shot doesn't it? I'm just not sure if I can credit this problem to a ram issue just yet.

Using a diagnostic utility by booting the machine from a floppy will actually start the machine up long before the harddrive can freeze it.
Dells usually have status lights on the back of them which can give you an idea of what is wrong, can you see the status lights?

The only lights are the lights at the front the tower and they stay green, flashing like it normally does when it starts up.

If the file system is damaged on your harddrive you will need to run diagnostics on the drive to see if it can be recovered.
I have just been trying to find out what make of harddrive is fitted to your machine but I have had no luck, its possible that it is a Seagate harddrive.
Is there any possibility that you can take the side panel off and read what make of harddrive it is?

It's a Dell. Press F12 when it first starts up and it will boot you into a menu, from which you can run complete hardware diagnostics.
