1st external hd

hi,
i just bought my 1st external hd, a western digital passport, just had two questions. can i drop my files anywhere in the drive, as it's got some things already on it, or do i need to drop it in a certain place? also does anyone know what sync data is for WD hd, is it neccessary to install?

Thanks.

Yep, you can put files where you want to. I'm pretty sure the existing files consist of the manual(s) and the sync software - though I wiped my WD external when I received it. Sync software theoretically would synchronise data between an internal drive and an external - though I prefer the freeware tool called 'SyncBack', if you want something like this.

Ahh got it, thanks. what is synch used for though, to keep a backup of my harddrive? does it just copy over everything and whenever i want it to update it just plug my external and run synch again?

I can't comment on WD's sync software, as I haven't used it. But with syncback, you select a number of folders that you want to keep backed up - or synchronised - with the external drive (or any other hard drive for that matter).

Alaron posted a review of the software in his 'freeware frenzy' column which has more information.
