External HD Suggestions

I think my main desktop is on the way out and I need to get an external HD to start backing things up. I have a laptop to hold me over until I get a new desktop, but I need some suggestions on a good external HD for backup and storage. Doesn't need to be top of the line, but a good drive for the money....a few options would be good to choose from.

Check this out : http://www.apricorn.com/product_deta...pe=family&id=7
$139 for a 250 GB back up (larger ones if needed), and with the included software you can clone your current hard drive.

Or you can always get a drive and external enclosure separately and plug them together. The downside to this is that there usually isn't any backup software included.

Get an apricorn enclosure, and they come with the same software Pam was talking about.

Enclosure? What's the difference between that and an external HD? Is that the same as what Pam is recommending?

An enclosure is just the case with the input/output ports,on/off switch etc...no hard drive (you supply and install your own). They sometimes come with software and one touch style instant back-up buttons. The apricorn that pam referred you to is depended on by a lot of people and sounds like it's about the best.I guess the software that comes with it is the same way. I don't own it yet but It's the one I'm going to get!

I was referencing Stuey's suggestion; you can get an internal harddrive, and buy an external enclosure for it, thus turning it into an external drive. Sometimes that works out cheaper.

Purchasing the drive and enclosure separately is usually a better value than buying a pre-assembled external drive. Plus, you can always use the drive internally in the future. The lApricorn that pam123 linked you to would be a very good value and a version of Acronis backup software is included.

For example, you can get this drive

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148141

And get this enclosure,

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817155601

And you will be spending 120$ or so, saving about 20$ rather then if you got it from the apricorn site.

And if you went with a 400Gb drive,

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148137

You would be saving about 65$.

Usually you can save some money when you buy the drive and the enclosure separate.

Another advantage to getting separates is the drive will have a 3 or 5 year warranty - the prebuilts usually only have a 1 year.

I just put a 250 Gb Western Digital in that enclosure for my sister last week.
Enclosure 49.98 with shipping, HD on sale for 49.99.
Installing the drive is real easy.
Just pull the hard drive jumper (if appropriate for the brand you get), plug in the data and power cables and 4 screws in the case.

That's helpful, thanks. I always worry about installation, but it sounds like this would be pretty easy.

Can anyone tell me if this drive is decent, assuming I only need about 160GB. I couldn't find it on newegg, so i wanted to see if anyone has heard anything about it. It seems to be geared for storage, rather than backup (probably needs software?).

There is really no HDD thats geared for storage rather then backup. Its really all the same, though some are faster then others. A drive and enclosure would be your best bang for the buck. It would cost around a 100$ with a 160GB Seagate drive (only 20$ or so more with a 200GB drive), and if you choose to expand; a new HDD is all you would need.

As I said - only a 1 year warranty with premade external drives, and open the case and the warranty is void.

Is there a compatibility issue between this enclosure:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817155601

and this drive:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148140

Seems to be a good deal for 320GB...

If this was mine,I would do the mfgr's. diagnostics on the old hard drive and if it's good I would just put that in an enclosure, plug it into your new computer and all your files are intact, ready to transfer over.

I'd get the SATA housing - it's 5 bucks cheaper.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817362002

The pics are old - it DOES have USB in addition to eSATA.
