Burning error

I've always burned DVD's before, and until I reformatted my computer it worked fine. I used to just put in the DVD, open the disc in DVD Shrink, and then it compresses the DVD for me to fit on a DVD - R disc that's 8x and hold 4.7 gigs. Then it backs the disc up onto the blank DVD using Nero 6. The only difference in what I do is that the blank discs I'm using to burn ar now 16x instead of 8x. My DVD burner is 8x. I doubt that's the problem but it could be.

Here's the error I receive:

I notice that in the log, nero says "could not burn at 4x, burning at 2.4x". This would indicate to me that the drive has a problem with the media. That it's rated at 16x, and your drive at 8x shouldn't make any difference - but there shouldn't be any problems burning at 8x, let alone 2.4x!

I'm tempted to say, therefore, that you should try updating the firmware on your drive - this allows it to handle newer dyes that new media uses. Here's a link

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1517

I'd first suggest finding what firmware the drive is already using - you can use Nero Info Tool for this if you have it installed. Need to confirm whether the drive requires the 1.0x firmwares, or the 1.1x firmwares

Open the properties of the IDE controllers and set all devices to DMA.

Check to make sure the media you've bought isn't double layer. My drive only writes double layer at 2.4x . Also you may want to check your burning software and verify its setting.

I'm not sure where your problem lies, but from my knowledge 2.4x indicates double layer.

Not necessarily - 2.4x is a valid speed for single layer.

I reinstalled my firmware and that didn't help so I treid setting my ide controllers to DMA. For Primary, my SATA harddrive it's auto set to serial ATA Generation 1 - 1.5G and the only other option is PIO mode. for my parallel ATA Controller the primary channel is set to my DVD drive and it lists Ultra DMA 2 - Ultra33, Ultra DMA 1, Ultra DMA 0, Multi-word DMA 2, Multi-word DMA 1, Multi-word DMA 0 , and PIO mode. For the secondary channel, my hard drive lists Ultra DMA 5 -Ultra100, Ultra DMA 4 - Ultra66, Ultra DMA 3, Ultra DMA 2 - Ultra33, Ultra DMA 1, Ultra DMA 0, Multi-word DMA 2, Multi-word DMA 1, Multi-word DMA 0, and PIO mode. By the way my two harddrives are both set as master drives and my DVD drive set as master as well. One is a SATA hard drive, the other is an IDE hard drive, and the DVD is connected with an IDE cable as well.
