Question about partitioning....

I recently re-installed windows on my 320 gb HDD, I created a 25gb partition that I installed windows on, and I just formatted the rest of the HDD as a large partition for programs and data. My question is, when I go to download/install something, will it automatically place any files it extracts into my large partition or do I need to manually set something? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I am used to only using 1 partition for everything...

I think you'll have to manually tell programs to install on the other partition. Downloads usually remember the last place you saved stuff; I know in firefox you can set up default locations for saving downloads.

Why two partitions? I'm not aware of significant benefits, and you've locked yourself into 25G for windows and however much for anything else. I'd consider staying with a single partition.

If you are going to partition your drive you should change the location of your "MY" folder. Rt-click it and then click move at the bottom of the screen and choose a location on your larger partition. Keep in mind that all installed software will by default attempt to install on the "C:" partition and you will have to manually change it each time you install something. Unless you want to mess around in the registry to change the default.

Why two partitions? Because when Windows crashes, it can be wiped out and restored with all the files intact! I don't play games so i don't have to worry about those kinds of installations. But all my software fits nicely on a 20 GB C drive along with Windows. I use Drive Image XML to back the C drive.

I've partitioned my 2 WD 320 (Raid-0) into two drives...C: drive is 160GB and D: is the rest. 160 gives plenty of room for apps and the rest gives PLENTY of room for all my data including lots of video referencing/data base material. I've been using this type of setup because I like to reload windows fresh every six months or so to keep everything running smoothly. I also copy all my frequently re-loaded software to the D: drive so when I go to re-load my applications it's can occure much faster from D: drive to C: vs the CD drive to C:. This method has been working great for me for years.

Indeed, partitionning saves alot of trouble, I do the same thing but with an eSata drive on my computer. Incredible how much it saves time.
