which motherboard chipset for c2d

which chipset(s) works best for the core 2 duo cpus'

What you have works the best for AGP - if you are looking to move up to PCI-E, the P965 is the best at this time, specifically the Asus P5B series with Gigabyte a decent second choice. Note that the P965 prefers SATA everything - the IDE controller is not very good.

looking to move up to PCI-E
i've read that about the IDE controller's, I wouldnt need any IDE hard drives but I would like to use a couple IDE DVD drives, would that be a problem?

It may not be. I'd recommend an Asus P5B. I had no problems with my IDE DVD drive. I think if you get one from Lite-On or a similar reputable manufacturer you should be fine. SATA drives are going to become more widely available.

Once you get Windows installed, IDE opticals usually (but not always) work okay on the JMicron controller. They do have to be new current model drives due to firmware issues - older drives may not be recognized.
