What you can do is chose the quick format (NTFS) option when it's offered.
We could help more if you'd give us some more info about your set up.
Do you have an XP cd or a set of restore disks?
If the former have you burned to disk all the drivers you need to get up and running again?
Do you have the necessary settings and IDs for you internet connection and email written down ?
All user IDs and passwords copied out for any web forums or stores?
You backed up all you data and downloaded programs, right?
If you have an iTunes account you've burned all the music to disks ?
The best way to avoid surprises is to have everything ready to go after a format.

Is the drive you are trying to format your system drive or is this a new drive that you are installing on a pc already running windows that will be used for storage?
