Upgrading my PC
I am looking to upgrade my pc. My main goal is to get a new core 2 duo processor, but in order to do that i gotta get a different mobo and new ram. Just lookin for some recommendations on what i can get that will all work together, and salvage most of what i already have.
I would like to get this processor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115003 I would like a SLI mobo(Asus Preferably), and 2 gigs of ram, can u please recommend some? (My current rig is in my signature, and i DO have an sli certified psu)

What is your budget?
Also, why 2 more gigabytes of RAM? You already have 4 512MB in your computer and plus XP can't register more than 3.2GB of RAM so basically your wasting some money on the RAM. I'd keep the 2GB you have now. Last edited by Fatality; 04-06-2007 at 06:09 PM. |

My friend has that same processor you chose, and it works like cake. He just recently got it. We couldn't select a certain RAM until we pick out a motherboard for you. I'm not really great with motherboards so I can't help you out there, sorry. Also, don't worry about my post before, I didn't quite read your thread completely. i understand what your doing, thrashing your old RAM and buying new RAM. You can always give me you RAM
. Cheers

I wouldn't bother with SLI, the returns you'll see don't justify the expense. One powerful video card is a much more sound investment, and your 7900GT should still have some life in it.
We recommend the Asus P5B motherboards, they have only one PCI-E slot. To go SLI, we recommend the Asus P5N32-E with the Nvidia 680i chipset. These are not cheap. With C2D, you'll need new ram, they use DDR2. Your DDR400 won't fit in the board. I'd get a 2GB kit (2x1GB) of Corsair VS DDR2-667.

I guess i really dont prefer asus,(can u recommend another sli c2d mobo that is not asus?) and i just want the sli motherboard so in the future going sli is an option. Eventually i plan on getting an 8800gtx or better
But Alaron if u honestly think i dont need sli then i guess i wont get it, i just would like to have it so i have the option of 2 cards. |

I recommend Asus because we know they are quality boards, not just because of your preference. They are our top choices for builds.
With SLI, I'm not picking on you. But we do see that arguement often, buying an SLI board for future upgrades. The issue we see with this is in many cases that in the meantime you are waiting to add a second card, something new comes out that outperforms the old version, even in SLI! Indeed this happened with the 6800 series and then the 7800 series, and again with the 8800s. Thats why we say that spending your money on one nice card makes more sense. Then you can upgrade to one new card down the road. Hope that helps.

Awesome, good answer, (Getting sli will just make me want to waste my money on another card anyways) if its not too hard can u give me direct links to the non sli mobo and ram you recommended on newegg.
There is a couple different models to chose from, im not sure which one is best. I just noticed on my psu is a sticker that says: Supports Intel Pentium 4 Supports AMD Athlon Will it work with the mobo u recommended? Last edited by J_ZeFF; 04-06-2007 at 06:43 PM. |

There are various flavors of P5B boards, but the plain P5B works for most people: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131030 The other versions add Wifi, or Firewire or onboard video if you need any of those things.
As for the RAM, this is the kit I'd get: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145098 If you plan on an 8800 upgrade, I wouldn't trust it to a Rosewill. The quality is average. We recommend the Corsair 520HX unit. Newegg has it as well, but ZZF has the best price right now: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...uctCode=373100 |
