hi can someone clear this up for me, hypothetically if i"ve got a motherboard with say a bios rev 2.01 which will work for a cpu up to a 3800, but got say a 4600 cpu which will require a bios upgrade to say 3.02 will it still post at startup with the unsupported cpu or not. or will it enabling you to upgrade or will it simply not post? i think you can guess its a bit more than hypothetical to me. gratefull for any replies as not sure what to do.

Moved to processors / motherboards.
The answer, basically, is no. If a board requires a certain BIOS revision to support a certain processor, then that's the only combination that it will boot with. You'd need to get hold of a lower spec CPU with which you can perform the BIOS upgrade.

thanks for that reply freakitchen i was hoping it would still post but as you say i will either get lower spec cpu or newer bios chip. would make more sense when you buy a new board if the manufacturer would label with bios rev on the board as shipped then if like me you take your time to get a cpu you already know the boards bios rev and where you stand. does"nt make sense to only know at the first post the bios rev.

I'd take a look at what the cheapest processor is that will fit your motherboard and use that to upgrade the bios.

i think your right lefty, i"ve backed myself into a corner taking so long with the build my system specs are;
thermaltake mambo case asus m2n-e am2 m/b 2x512mb kit a-data ddr2 800mhz 1.8v fsp bluestorm 500w p/s sony dru820 combo dvd xfx gt7600 panasonic fdd of course a i"ll probably have to get bottom spec dual core such as athlon 64 x2 3600+ am2 because of ddr2 800 memory not sure if low end sempron 3000+ will work with 800 memory. oh well only myself to blame greediness waiting on price drops. still waiting to hear from asus support as i asked them doesn"t hurt to ask .

Might as well see what they say....
You don't need a dual core processor. Any socket AM2 processor compatible with the board will work.....but I'm afraid the cheapest one is $52: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103639 Definitely see what ASUS says. |
