Chipset cooling

Not sure whether to put it in this section or MB section.
Anyway it's about cooling so I put it here.

Any idea when then I should have a chipset cooling?

hello,

i do some chipset cooling by using a small heatsink similar to those used on surveillance pci cards. size is 1" x 1" and it perfectly sized for some chipsets. I also installed some on my modem and LAN card. Other mobo has already some heatsink installed. And if you can, some water cooling packages also offer ways to cool your system (CPU,videocard and including the chipset).

when to cool the chipset?, maybe when your computer is working too long just to make sure it won't heat so much.

wbr,

Two times come to mind when you want to add something that didn't come with the motherboard: when you're using passive CPU cooling (or low CFM) like a Zalman or the like; or when you use water cooling and you don't put a block on the chipset. Most makers assume the chipsets will be cooled by the CPU fan blowing around a lot air and thus keeping the chipset cool.

When you're overclocking.

Well, with today's advanced, high speed northbridges you will need cooling no matter what to keep the chip from overheating. But Cricket is right, if you plan to overclock and push the memory speeds and FSB higher significantly higher thank stock, you should look at a better cooling solution for your chipset. HTH

With stock speeds, a passive heatsink should do with decent case airflow. If overclocking and really pushing speeds, then yeah go for some active cooling.

Active cooling: heatsink and fan.
Passive cooling: heatsink only.
