Problem w/ formatting Maxtor 2.1GB HD

I tried formatting the drive, but could only get 472 MB out if it. BIOS shows 2.1 GB, but all windows and dos formatting operations come up with only 472 MBs. I have tried several methods to get it up to speed... DOS 6.22 formatting, Windows 98 Complete Install, Windows 98 Reformatting, Norton Disk Doctor and Disk Clean, and Maxtor PowerDiag Utility (which recommends "replace drive"). Any ideas??? ---posting this for my friend.

If PowerDiag says to replace it - the drive is shot. You might try SpinRite or a zero fill utility and repartitioning, but it sounds like it's ready to be turned into a paperweight. PowerDiag should have a zero fill.
