heatsink question
I'd like to get into some serious overclocking, but i'm going to need a new heatsink. After trying to overclock my duron 900 to 1ghz last week, the temps were high and the computer froze up fast. Can someone recommend a reallly good heatsink? I got some artic silver lying around which will help.
Another question, how do I remove old compound from the processor? I removed some with a paper towell, but there's still a small white film covering the top which i'd like to get rid of. Thanks |

Hi Eric H,
To remove old paste or compound from the CPU, I used a cotton bud dipped in alcohol (Isopropanol). Just use repeated applications and this will clean it up fine. HTH |

Hi Eric H.,
Here are a few good heatsink/fan units for you to consider: Alpha PAL8045 Cooler Master CB5-6G52 Global Win CAK38 Millenium Thermal Products Glaciator Swiftech MC462 Thermalright SK-6 Most of these are all copper construction (Alpha and Swiftech are copper/aluminum construction) and perform really well. They aren't cheap though, prices range from $30 to $80. These will also be quite loud as most come with 6000 to 7000 rpm fans. Cricket

For acheaper but still high quality Swiftech heatsink I'll add the Swiftech MC-370 to the list. It (along with many of these other heatsinks listed) can be had from www.sidewindercomputers.com for a good price. HTH

I agree with everybody else, also look into the VANTEC CCK 6035D Copper sink. Also You will want to add other cooling to your case if you haven't already. One thing that I like and really helped reduce the temps on my 1.2 gig running a CAK38 was the card cooler from the link below. It's really quiet and helps to move the air around.
Also, for cooling products you cannot beat sidewinder for their product line, quality and service. http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/cafcarcool.html |

Here is a link to the most comprehensive bench testing I have ever seen for heatsinks. I used this info to select my Silverado (expensive but very efficient and very quiet)which I am delighted with.
