I am working on a Dell Dimension 2400 w/Windows XP. This computer was taken to a local computer repair shop were they re-installed Windows on the machine. After getting the machine back the fax portion of the Dell 3 in 1 fax/printer/scanner does not work. The 3 in 1 plugs in by USB. Also when I try to plug in a USB flash memory disk, I get a USB device not recognized message in the lower right hand. When I unplug the 3 in 1 printer and plug in the USB flash disk, the flash disk works fine. When the 3 in 1 printer is plugged back in the problem returns.
Does this mean that the USB cable for the printer is defective or could I be looking at a more seriously problem with the printer?

Have the same problem. I think is has to do with the card readers on the the 3in1(assuming you have them). When I get home I'll look into it and see if there is a solution.

Yes, there are card readers in the 3 in 1. I did not think that they would be causing a problem because this problem did not arise until after it was received back from the local repair shop.
I wonder if it is just the wrong driver installed for the 3 in 1? I would be very interested in any solution that you find, I will not see the computer again until this saturday to work on it. |

I would probably try updating the the newest drivers and see if the problem is fixed.

The USB cable turned out to be defective. After I replaced the USB cable the 'USB device not recognized' error message went away and I could see the card reader drive in 'My Computer' window.
After I replaced the USB cable I uninstalled the software and drivers for the 3-in-1 printer and reinstalled. Everything works fine now. Thanks to everybody for their input. |
