SATA or IDE in DVD Burners?? advice please
Hi all, I'm wondering how big a deal SATA is over IDE for DVD burners? I might have mwave build my cpu, but I'm having a hard time finding a good DVD Burner drive that would be SATA, dual layer, and Lightscribe. The closest is this Lite On one:
http://www.mwave.com/mwave/viewspec....iteria=AA54530 It's everything but SATA, it's IDE. Is this a big deal? What if one is SATA and one IDE? I've heard it just slows the SATA one down to the level of the IDE? Can you get a MOBO and PSU that all works with one of each? And mostly, can anyone find a version of what I'm looking for at mwave.com? (SATA, Dual layer, DVD Burner w/ Lightscribe?) Thanks! |

Just to add, I found this one, is SATA worth going from a brand like Lite On to a brand like Samsung if it gets you from IDE to SATA?

An IDE burner is fine in all motherboards that have a native IDE controller. If you are building with a motherboard that only has a 3rd party IDE controller such as the JMicron on the Intel 965-based boards, then SATA is recommended.
You may want to compare what Mwave has with Newegg. It's no big deal building it yourself, it's not difficult. |

If you have an IDE and SATA on one system one will not slow down the other.
They are completely separate. Most newer motherboard will have SATA and usually one IDE port. For the power supply most new ones also will have SATA power plugs but just be mindful when looking.

Part of the choice is future expansion. If the mobo has only a few SATA available, then I'd choose IDE opticals. This motherboard, for example, has only 4 SATA connections but they are occupied with HDs, so the only thing left is IDE. Some mobos have 6 or more SATA connection so your options are better.
