sound card woes Help!

Please see page 2 for my build info.Got the new leadtek gforce 2 mx video card installed without a hitch. Then went on to install the soundblaster live value sound card and ran into problems.I did an install first with the cd that came with the card but due to issues the card has with the via southbridge architecture the card didnt work. I expected this due to cautions from glc,and updated with the 3.0 version software from the web site.Midway through the update,a windows blue screen error popped up and said I needed to do a windows reinstall to fix the problem.I finished loading the update and the card began to work.So I then tried to do a reinstall of windows 98 se to rectify that problem. It went smoothly until near the end when a blue screen fatal error popped up and everything froze.Ive tried this several times and it does the same thing. The computer seems to run normally now except for a DEVLDR16 error that pops up after Ive been online for 45 minutes to an hour. This error can not be closed out and stays on the screen no matter what unless I reboot. Then It is ok for another hour or so then pops back up.Any ideas for a fix?
Thanks in advance.

Hi ric44_us,

A quick search in Google for DEVLDR16 finds a lot of information. Here's is a quote from a Gateway support site:
Quote:
Issue: Win 98 - devldr16.exe caused an illegal operation in kernel32.dll (sblive cd)

devldr16.exe caused an illegal operation in kernel32.dll.This happens when you try to use the software supplied on the Creative sblive cd

Solution 1:
devldr16.exe starts up in the background but can't be removed from msconfig.

Go to c:\windows then go to the 'system' directory. Look for the file called devldr16.exe. Delete the file and restart the system and check that it hasn't started in the background by pressing ctrl+alt+delete and look for devldrv16. Install the software that is supplied and automatically installed from the sblive cd.

Solution 2:

Search for devldr16.exe in c:\windows\system then delete it Do not restart your system. Install the SBlive drivers using the autorun from the Sblive CD shipped with the system Restart after the installation is finished. And everything should beworking correctly.
http://www.gateway2000.co.uk/tech/ho...ue4/issue4.htm

and another post in a help forum post offered this fix:
Quote:
Disable "Creative SB16 Emulation" in Device Manager. If you have no interest in dos sound/games etc, then rename devldr16.exe to devldr16.bak and reboot. Use the "Cleanup" button in Msconfig to remove entry. You can disable SB16 emulation from your System Properties.
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
2. Double click the System icon, then click the Device Manager tab.
3. Click the plus sign (+) next to Creative Miscellaneous Devices, unless the device category is already expanded with a minus sign (-).
4. Click Creative SB Live! SB16 Emulation to highlight it, then click Properties.
5. Put a check-mark in box that says Disable This Device In This Hardware Profile.
6. Click OK, OK again, and then Close. Note that this will disable your sound device in MS-DOS mode.
Be wary of this, in system properties there are many entries for a properly installed SoundBlaster, the only one you should disable is the SB16 emulation, disabling the multimedia entry that is paired with it will cause you to lose the joystick.
And a reply from a Creative Rep. said this:
Quote:
Do a search for devldr16.exe. Rename all occurances except the one in Windows System directory.

If that does not fix the error then please do the following.
Boot to Safe Mode. To do this reboot the computer and press the F8 key once every second. This will bring up the Windows Startup Menu. Select Safe Mode and press enter.

Uninstall the Sound Blaster Live! software by using Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
Remove all entries for the SB Live! in the (Start > Settings > Control Panel > System) Device Manager. This includes entries in both Sound, Video, and Game Controllers and Creative Miscellaneous Devices.
Remove all old sound card listings in Device Manager.
Delete the following files from the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory:
EMU10K1.VXD
SB*.*
CIFMAN*.*
SFMAN*.*
CTSYN*.*
CTWT16.DRV
CTMM16.DRV
A3D.DLL
DEVCON32.DLL
AC3API.DLL
Rename *.bin to *.cli in the C:\WINDOWS\INF directory.
Rename EMU10K1.INF to EMU10K1.CLI in the C:\WINDOWS\INF directory.
Rename CTMISC.INF to CTMISC.CLI in the C:\WINDOWS\INF directory.

Please turn off all the background programs that are loading, especially any anti-virus or crash protection software. The easiest way to do this is:

1. Click on the Start button on the task bar and select Run.

2. Backspace over what currently is listed in the Open box, type: MSCONFIG and click 'Ok'.

3. Click on Selective Startup.

4. Uncheck each of the boxes this highlighted and click 'Ok'.

Shut down the computer and take the SB Live out of the computer. Reboot 3 times. Then put the sound card back in the computer.
Restart the computer and then reinstall the drivers when the card is detected.
Once the drivers are installed, reinstall the SB Live! software.

If this does not fix the problem please let us know.

Do the easiest one first. Hope that helps.

Hey Dr.Z I appreciate the help.I had to finally delete all traces of the soundblaster on the HD and do a re-install of windows to clear things up.I could then do an install of the soundblaster live value with the provided CD.It seems they are now putting the updated version 3.0 software with their latest cards so the download at the creative site is not necessary. Thanks again, ric.
