Shutdown Problems on HP pavilion

ok, i am working on a friends computer right now, he Has an HP pavilion running 98 SE. i have downloaded all the windows updates and the shutdown fix. The problem is, when it goes to shut down it displays different characters all over the screen on a black background. I thought this might have something to do with the fact that he has onboard video enabled and he has a video card installed. For some reason i cant get into the Bios to disable the onboard video. when the computer starts up it goes from the blue HP pavilion screen straight to windows 98. I try hitting del, i tried f10, i tried f12. What can i do to get into the bios?

As I remember, start hitting ESC and the HP splash screen will drop and it will TELL you which key to get into setup - and I think it's either F1 or F2. There MAY be a jumper on the motherboard to disable onboard video.
