IDE Cable, No power to hdd

I'm having a little bit of trouble with my hard drives. Whenever the IDE cable is connected to the motherboard and to the hdd or cd rom, they get no power. But when the ide cable is not connected to the mobo, they get power... I cant figure out just why this is happening because just a few minutes before all I did was rebooted the comp from the start menu..

What kind of computer is this? Home built or name brand?

Do you know the system specs? If you do, please post the complete system specs for this computer.

Are you getting any error messages at startup regarding the IDE controllers?

Have you tried replacing the IDE cable yet?

Home built

ECS N2U400-A
AMD 2500+
2gb RAM
120GB WD HDD
ATI Radeon 9800 PRO
Lite-On DVD RW

The only error messages that are popping is is the Error wanting me to insert a system disk and then press enter

And nah, I havnt tried a new ide cable. Its both the CD Rom and the HDD that are doing this, though

Well after a bit of travel to obatin the cable and even more fittling with it, the harddrive is now spinning and working like nothing ever happend. Very strange though that the IDE cable suddenly just stopped working.

no word yet on the CD Rom However. I was only able to get one cable.

You can slave the CD-Rom to the hard drive on the same cable.

If you're using a 80 wire IDE cable the wires in them are very thin and will break or corrode quicker than the older 40 wire IDE cable wires. I've seen this happen a few times since the 80 wire cables were introduced.

Hey, sorry for the delayed response. Work, family, etc.

Thanks for all your guys' help with this. It was quite prompt. I wasnt expecting it.

I've been a long timer on other tech forums and this is the first time I've come here

Buuuut I have another problem to see if I can stump you guys with :P

I've stuck a HDD in an inclosure and its connected to my laptop via USB. I'm trying to install windows XP on it and it tells me that it cannot access the drive because it doesnt have permission to do it. Er something like that. It wont install XP on it either way lol. Any ideas?

You're trying to install WinXP on an external hard drive? Why?

I don't think you can run the laptop from an external hard drive...at least I've never heard of anyone doing it before.

Copy your data over to the external quickly! Then worry about replacing the laptop harddrive. They can be purchased on newegg.com

Yeah, I've looked them up before, about 30ish dollars for a 40gb one, which for this thing is more than what I'll need. The sukcers not really worth spending a whole lot of money on.

Sony Vaio PCG-FX140
ME pre-installed
256mb RAM, upgradeble to 512
10gb hdd installed

Get a copy of Spinrite from GRC.com and run it on your laptop drive. It has saved my butt many times.

If you don't have OS CDs, replacing the harddrive isn't going to get you very far; you'll be left without an operating system. Make sure you have CDs first.
