Needing a new mouse. My grenade button is broken. :(
Hi again, and thanks for reading!!
I'm sure there was a thread here a month or so ago, about someone else also needing a new mouse. I don't remember the outcome, or if it was even posted here, might have been somewhere else. I know you all had some good info to share in the past, and I am curious to know what you are currently using. I've come to value all your opinions over the last 3 years or so, and this is either the first or second place I go to when needing help. The first place might be a RLF at work or family member. Sorry to put you behind my brother. I'd like to stay around $30, anything else, my wife will have issues. But if the product warrants that I spend another $10 or $15, then I might do it, depending on what I'm getting. All that being said... I currently have a 5 button mouse, the thumb button that is used for for Forward when web browsing requires that I press it VERY hard to work. I guess that's because I've used that button to throw grenades for the last 2 years. I play Call of Duty 2 with a clan that my brother and I run, United States MANIACS Clan!! Yes the abbv is *USMC*, draws a lot of attention, we might change it to *USM*. Also play some COD1, and UO, Battlefield 1942, Medal of Honor: Allied Assualt once in awhile. Those are the only games I can think of that need that button. I've got a SideWinder FreeStyle Pro for my Need for Speed games, and an old SideWinder Force Feedback Pro that I get out once in awhile for the good ol' Mech Warrior games. I don't care if it's USB, PS/2 or Wireless, Optical, Laser, as long as it folds, and fits under a bed. Sorry, that was a quote from an old TV show. BUT IT MUST HAVE 5 BUTTONS. I'm looking at this one right now, Logitech MX518 2-Tone 8 Buttons 1 x Wheel USB + PS/2 Wired Optical Gaming-Grade Mouse - Retail $39.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16826104178 Any and all idea welcome, thanks. Mark. BTW -- if any COD 2 player wants to try his luck against me, by all means please drop by!!! I'm not the best, but I sure promise to give you a run for your money. You'll find me playing as *USMC* General Chicken. Teamspeak: 8.9.4.38:8810 Game Server: 8.12.17.216:28960 Map and Mod downloads: http://usmaniacs.clanservers.com Proboards forum: http://usmaniacs.com/ Website coming soon along with a new forum http://usmaniacs.com/phpBB/ I also posted this in the Gaming department, hoping to get some ideas from gamers. If would like only one thread, by all means, please flip a coin and delete the loser.

Mark, we do only allow one thread per question, but I closed your other one rather than deleting it so that it remains in the gaming forum.
That MX518 i'm told is a great gaming mouse - a friend of mine said good things about his. The G5 is another option - it is laser rather than optical - but lacks a forward button which may annoy you http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16826104191 The MX610 is a wireless alternative. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16826104196 I really wouldn't want to use a wired mouse anymore, but there are plenty gamers out there who swear that wireless mice simply aren't as responsive. I can't say it's something I've noticed, but, I'm a very occasional gamer. I personally use an MX Revolution - a very nice mouse, but quite a bit out of the price range you stated. Oh, and if you can get to a bricks'n'mortar store that has display models of these mice, then I'd suggest going and trying them out.

I'm glad to hear how much your friend like the MX 518. It's nice hearing from 2nd hand, rather than reading reviews about how great something is, when you have no idea who they are, or what they use it for. I trust you guys here more than the reviews, but they do have some weight. They help me pick out what to have on my post.
I don't think I'll be interested in the G5 if there is no forward button, that's the whole reason I'm needing to get a mouse at this time. Because I've clicked it to death. But it does have 6 buttons, so I'm sure I would find a happy alternate. What is the difference between optical and laser? Not really looking at getting a wireless, for two reasons mainly. 1.) I have 3 girls, ages 11, 8, and 3. I'm afraid between the two younger ones, I'd find the mouse under the couch, in the bathroom, in their bedroom, in the laundry, who knows where. 2.) I'm not interested in having to change batteries during a scrimmage or a match while my 3 buddies try to play without me for 3 or 4 minutes. We had a TWL match against a team a few weeks ago, where one player had to drop out 10 minutes into the first half. We were nice enough to let him join after the 2nd half started, but I think we had to wait another 15 minutes. He ended up stealing batteries from the TV remote if I remember correctly. That's a position I want to put my friends in, but a serious gamer should be embarresed if he did something like that during a match. 3.) There is also the tale of not be as responsive, but I've never used a wireless before, so I can't be a fair judge. I'll just have to go from what I've heard. After reading about those two, I really do like the MX 610. I might have to think about going wireless. .... Might. ![]() Oh, and thanks for linking the closed thread to this one. Now members can read both, and I'll have all the replies in one thread. WOOT!!!

For an alternative to Logitech, check out Razer. I've got the Diamondback and love it (haven't used a gaming logitech to compare it to though).
It's sensitive enough that I can do a complete 180 degree turn by just flicking my wrist (useful when I get snuck up on, which happens too much lol). But of course the sensitivity is adjustable. The Diamondback software is unusual in that you can assign keyboard keystrokes to each of the 4 extra buttons. This means that games that don't support weird mouse buttons will still be able to use the RAZER buttons (I set mine to [ ; ] and ' ) because you just type that keyboard 'letter' in for the control.

Wild, I didn't know that about the extra buttons. I'll have to read up on that. One of the guys in my clan uses that, and he said he really loves it.

I also have the MX revolution like Tin and love it. I use it for games a lot and works just great as long as you charge it when you are not using it. It will last for hours just makes sure you put it in the charger at night or whenever. The software is really nice and you can assign different functions or keystrokes to the buttons. Speaking of which make sure if you get it to disable/change the search button on the mouse, if you hit it in some games it minimizes them or when you close the game you have 15 search windows open. I don't think you can assign keystrokes/functions to the scroll wheel by the thumb, it doesn't spin but it rotates say 30 degrees either way, usually set to zoom in/out or switch documents. One fun feature on it as well is that you can change how the main scroll wheel works on the fly. It doesn't have a middle mouse button, when you press it it electronically (wont work if the mouse is off) switches between regular scroll wheel and a free spinning one. So instead of click click click and taking forever you can give it a good pull with your finger and it will spin for 20 seconds, very nice for some games and long web pages. Some people report that occasionally the mouse will freeze up for 1/2 to 1 second randomly, I have noticed this really only happens if you let the battery get low. My battery will last for hours as long as I charge it when not in use, I've been at LAN parties where I used it for a 8+ hours before having to charge it. It has forward/back buttons on it that you can assign to functions in games without even installing the software (not same as far as the search button). You do also get what you pay for, the MX rev will cost you a pretty penny.
As far as wireless vs corded mice, there is going to be a delay wireless vs corded, a lot of times it is so small you won't know the difference. Wired wont have to rely on batteries and they are attached to your computer so your girls are less likely to run off with it I would think. I personally don't like the MX518 because of the size of my hands (most mice are too small for me), but I have a couple of friends who use it and like it. I have a G5 and I love it. I personaly think that the price is too high; I mean the mouse has been around for ages. I found mine on eBay for under 30 bucks, and it was an amazing deal. The Logitec software is very nice and updates frequently. My favorite part is the adjustable weight carraige. No matter if you like a light or heavy mouse, you can make this fit your needs. The mouse also has very wide feet that keep it from getting "sticky" like other mouse with smaller feet. I'll tell you right now tho, this mouse SUCKS with a regular mousepad. You have to buy a nice mousepad and you will have the best mouse experience ever. I can literaly just nudge my mouse and it will float across my Razer eXactMat.

i have the MX518 and this mouse DON'T have 8 usable buttons but 5.
-Two thumb buttons -Right and left click -Mouse wheel clik that's it .. two buttons is used to adjust sensibility on the fly ( no driver required ) and the last button require a logitech software ... you can't bind them at anything while gaming. overall .. a good mouse.

Going with the MX518. I have some friends from X-Fire that also use it, and they have said some great things about it.
Thanks for all the replies, perhaps when I've some more money I'll into getting one of those MX Revolutions. |
