SATA shows as IDE in BIOS?

I recently just built my first system and was wondering about certain options in my bios. I just found out that in my bios it says SATA RAID/AHCI Mode-disabled, and the onboard SATA/IDE Contrl Mode is set to IDE not AHCI, which I guess means SATA. Since I found this out, I read about configuring a SATA drive and it says to enable AHCI mode that I'd have to reinstall my operating system. If I reinstalled my operating system does that mean everything on my hard drive would be deleted, or is there a way to enable SATA without reinstalling my OS? Also, would setting it to SATA necessarily give me a performance boost over having it set to IDE.

you need your sata drivers for your mb on a floppy disk then set your bios to sata/ahci hit f10 to save then exit once your pc reboots insert your os disk and boot from the cd.... follow the instructions to install windows (hit enter) then hit f8 to accept then r to repair windows...... it will go through the original install process but be much faster obviously cause its repairing windows...... follow the instructions and bingo your stuff is the same.... except ie and wmp will have to be re updated to ie7 and wmp 11 just went through this process not 45 min ago works just fine

if you are using award bios like my gigabyte to set the sata you need to enter your bios... go to intergrated peripherals......make sure onchip sata controller is enabled.... then set onchip sata type to SATA->AHCI then obviously hit f10 to save and exit then repair os as above

One quick question. How do I put the SATA drivers onto a floppy disk? And are you sure that repairing Vista isn't go to erase everything on my hard drive?

Yeah, good luck with that repair thing.

I tried it and it didn't work. Had to reinstall WinXP from scratch.

Check your mobo maker's web site for floppy images to create floppies.

Maybe this will help:
Quote:
* Enabling AHCI in a system BIOS will cause a 0x7B Blue Screen of Death STOP error on installations of Windows XP where AHCI/RAID drivers for that system's chipset are not installed. Switching to AHCI mode requires installing new drivers before changing the BIOS settings.
* When attempting to install Microsoft Windows XP or a previous version on an AHCI-enabled system will cause the setup to fail with the error message "set up could not detect hard disk drive...". This problem can only be corrected by using a floppy disk with the appropriate drivers or by slipstreaming the appropriate drivers into the Windows XP installation CD.
* Enabling AHCI in a system BIOS with Windows Vista already installed will result in a BSoD if SATA has been running in IDE mode during Vista's installation. Before enabling AHCI in the BIOS, users must first follow the instructions found at Microsoft Knowledge Base article 922976 (currently unavailable in English, see this workaround using babelfish).
* Enabling AHCI or receiving a system with AHCI enable, will cause EPHD (Encryption Plus Hard Drive from PC Guardian) to error out when attempting to Hibernate out of Windows OS (such as Windows XP). The major aspect of this issue is that it can NOT be changed without reimaging/re-installing the entire system. There may be a root level fix not apparent on new (Circa April 2007) HP Compaq NC8430 laptops.
* Enabling AHCI in a system BIOS on installations of Windows XP or Windows Vista, will cause SATA Optical drives to disappear. A Hotfix for Windows Vista is available. SATA optical drives are not available after you start a Windows Vista-based computer.[2]

backithink, I'm going through my 1st build and noticed my SATA drive showed up as IDE, too. I'm sooo new at this stuff that I'm still not sure I follow the steps to correct the BIOS setting. I don't have a floppy drive, just dvd/cd drive. I assume that would work ok. I'm getting ready to reinstall my OS because I had my card reader connected before I installed the OS and it ended up naming my hard drive as H: .... I want it to be C:.

You NEED a floppy drive to install 3rd party storage drivers for XP - period. A CD/DVD will not cut it.
