I bought a new Dell 745 for my girlfriend. It came with Vista Business on it. Soon as I started it up, it showed exactly 3GB of RAM, so I was like huh?
From the BIOS, the pc is recognizing it has 4 dim of 1GB sticks in it. I have since loaded the computer with a dual boot OS, XP Pro SP2 and Vista Home Premium, still no change. XP shows 2.99GB of RAM also. In vista to be exact, it shows 3061mb of RAM. I have removed the sticks and swapped them in the dimms (keeping them in pairs) I have started the computer with 1, 2, 3 & 4 sticks of RAM in it. Through deduction, I've found it's not one specific dim, and it's not one specific stick of RAM, but with 3 sticks in, it shows up the same amount of RAM whether the machine has 3 or 4 sticks of RAM in it, in both XP and Vista. So what is the deal? This PC is capable of 4GB of RAM and it has 4GB of stock Dell RAM in it(Hynix-Hyundai). None of the slots seem bad and none of the RAM seems bad, but in the end, the PC is only recognizing 3GB whether there are 3 or 4 sticks of 1GB installed. Anyone ran into this? Anyone got an answer for this? I was told the 256mb video card (ATI 1300) might be keeping the pc from recognizing the RAM. I didn't really believe that, but I pulled the video card and gave it a shot. That is not the issue. I'm out of idea's, I would appreciate some input on this one.

You have to have the 64 bit version in order to use more then 3.x gigs of ram.

That answered my question. I had no clue about 32 bit and the 3GB limit. That's gotta be the issue as both XP & Vista Home Premium are 32 bit versions.
I want to say thank you all to everyone that replied. I appreciate the helpful input. Now I can just deal with it in peace! lol... |
