Time for a New Mouse?

I am thinking that it is about time to upgrade my old HP ball mouse to something better. The main game that I play is CS:S, but I also might be getting some RTS games soon. What do you recommend? From a little research it seems like laser is the way to go, and that wireless isn't relilable enough for gaming. I really think it is wierd that anyone would want a mouse with like 8 buttons. I just want a scroll wheel and two clickers. I feel like more buttons will get in the way. The only Laser Mouse that I can find with 3 buttons is a small notebook mouse. So, I am thinking about getting this MS wired Laser: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16826105183 . I read that you can disable the side buttons, which I will probably end up doing unless they don't get in the way. I don't want to spend too much money (under $30???), and like I said before I don't really like the idea of having buttons all over the mouse. So if you have any recommendations for a nice no frills mouse that will do very well in gaming precision and such, I would love to hear about it. I am also wondering what I should do for a good cheap mousepad. I don't really want to spend $20 for some gaming mouse pad, but my wooden desk has some scratches on it that don't agree well with a cheap ($8) optical HP Brand mouse that I bought.

You may want to rethink the extra buttons. They can come in quite handy and many people, including myself, find it very hard to use a 'basic' mouse after using one with extra buttons. Any buttons can be reprogrammed for any task you like, including game controls.

I suggest taking a trip to a bigbox store and feeling the display models. You'll know what feels right.

I have been playing UT for years with different versions of a Logitech wireless mouse. I love wireless, although i do have a cramped desk, so a wire just gets in the way.

i do agree with Alaron, the more buttons the better. You can easily configure extra buttons to do whatever you want them to do.....or you can just disable them or assign them to a button that is not used in CS.

If you play alot, i would hold out and buy a more expensive mouse.

andper10, it's worthwhile not cheaping out on a good mouse for gaming... it will save a lot of frustration in the long run. And with those extra two mouse buttons you can configure them to jump and throw flashies, which you'll understand is very useful in CS:S, without taking your hand off the mouse/movement controllers. I used to think the same as you, but you'd be surprised how easy it is to adjust.
I actually recommend a trackball, it takes a little getting used to (your scores will be down for about a fortnight), but after that it's easy... it's slightly more precise, the only downside being it's harder to do a 180 degree turn

The perfect mouse for gaming are either MS Wheel Mouse Optical 1.1a or MS Intellimouse Explorer 3.0. Both are used by the majority of professional gamers because of they're comfort, simplicity, and performance.

I have had many mice in my time and mainly play FPS and MMO's. I'm currently using the v3.0 and it's the best mouse I've ever had.

My original v3 gave up after a 3-4+ years of use and found out they didn't make them anymore. I tried a few mice since then (including the MS LaserMouse 6000) and none of them compare to the v3.

They have since brought back the v3 due to popular demand, and thank god they did!

Andper10, that mouse you linked to is the same one I have. It's a really nice mouse. I agree with everyone else, you will appreciate the extra buttons. If you can hang out a little bit longer it may go on sale again. I paid $20 plus shipping for mine at Newegg about a month ago.

DN8, you got anything to support the above statement?? I'm not calling you out, just curious to read up on it myself
