The time has finally come when my stock HDD is running out of space. I was wondering if I need to have an open bay on the inside of the case (fully enclosed) or if i needed to have an open bay with access to the out side of the case.

Typically you will just need a 3.5" mount available(inside). You might want to make sure you have enough cable connections left to add the extra drive.

Any internal 3.5" bay is fine for a hard drive - you don't need one with access to the case exterior.
