Windows XP Network Problem

I have my networkhardware set up exactly the same as i did when using windows ME. There are two PCs, each with an NIC, one hub and network cables linking it all up. Everything worked fine in windows ME, i could see the workgroup and computers in network neighbourhood.

However with windows xp i am having problems. I have ran the network setup wizard on both PCs, i chose the option set up the network, no internet connection, as both machines have separate modems. The setup wizard runs right through, i have tried using various workgroup names including the default mshome.

When i go to my network places and click view workgroup computers i get the message(note: MSHOME is the workgroup name)

Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of thisserver to find out if you have access permissions.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available.

I have no idea how to fix this problem. At the command prompt when i ping the other PCs ip address i get a reply.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks,

Richy

On WinXP you have to be logged on as Administrator - or as a user with administrator rights to connect and set the network properties - when you log on to your computer do you see under your name (Administrator )?

The also right click on the My Network neighborhood and look at the properties -do those match on both of them?

Try logging in as Administrator - and if XP is like Win2000 here, you have to enable the guest account.

Is the name of your logon account administrator, if not you may need to log on as the administrator. Not your account. Administrators account gets built as you install the software and has some different rights then a standard user account. If you are logging on as administrator, the next thing I would look at is the relationship between the two pcs and then make sure both systems have the same account names loaded from the other box. example: 1st box = jet user name = rider password is abc123 this account needs to be loaded on the other box as well box does not matter but you have to load rider as an account and abc123 as the password so they can talk when rider is logged in.

Same Problem - Admin Rights don't work? >:p

I'm wondering if it's not referring to the andmin rights you enable/disable through control panel, there's also a different (it seems) administrator that shows up in safe mode. In regular mode, I'm the only user and the computer skips the password and goes straight into my account, but in safe mode, there's TWO users, myself and ADMINISTRATOR. Maybe this is where we need to start hunting? If somebody tries and gets somewhere, please let me know 'cause I just get tangled, by the time I get into Admin, I've forgotten why I wanted to.
