Just wanted to consult with group, I want to buy some self stick sound deadening insulation material the kind that is commonly used by audiophiles to insulate the car's interior under the trim from the outside noices.
I thought of cutting it out and gluing it to the inside of my case panels. My friend however brought up the point of overheating, but I don't think that will be a problem. I mean, the CFM of air circulation will stay the same and it's not like the case panels conduct heat, they are always at room temp so I don't see why there will be extra heat build up. As to why I am doing it, well too many fans inside the PC create a lot of hum. I can hear my PC if I am standing at the end of the hallway out of the room. Reducing the number of fans is not an option either ![]() So before I go spend the $$$ on expensive insulation what do you say yeah or nay? |

I used to have a diesel pickup and that stuff they sell at Pepboys does a good job of dampening sound. I don't see why it wouldn't work as long as you didn't cover the exaust vent grids and intake ports.

Hi AlexK,
I read an article somewhere that used foam sound deadening material to try to quiet a noisy PC...can't remember where though. They said the noise level did go down some (mostly less heatsink fan noise) and the case temp did go up alittle, but nothing drastic. Like Confused said, as long as you don't cover your fan openings, your temps should be fine. But since the case fans are at the openings, depending on how noisy those case fans are, you may not reduce noise levels that much. Cricket

You can try it, but I would be cautious and monitor the CPU temp and case temp. The reason I say this is that metal will transfer heat from inside the case to the outside air, however if you put the insulate on the panels, it may act as you guessed it, as "insulate" of heat and not just sound.

Yeah, and if you don't want to spend a lot of money on Dynamat go to McMaster.com. I bought a roll of sound deadening mat that has the same properties as the original dynamat for my truck doors(speaker rattle). It has a peel off label for the self adhesive side. It was really cheap - its been awhile but I'm guessing it was close to a 4'X5' piece for $8.

This is the place to go if you want to hum instead of roar
http://www.quietpc.com/ The alternative is to leave it as is, and, in a few years, you'll be as deaf as the rest of us. Then you can use 10 x 7k fans without fear. |

Thanks for the link Pardegt. McMaster carries a wide and varied product line. Price seems good on the few that I checked.

How about thin sheets of neoprene we use this at work and it would seem perfect
although I am not sure. You can buy it from Grainger . You can buy this material in different thickness also it is available in sheets. It can be applied with either glue or double face tape. |
