fqpissed Sound card(s) very quiet

I have an older IBM Aptiva in which sound cards refuse to work. I have tried multiple cards with out any luck. The device properties shows the card(s) as working with no conflicts. I am stumped. Getting desparate here, this is the machine my kids use. Don't know how much longer I can take the whining.
(and no the mute is not on).

Any help would be much appreciated.

Are you sure the speakers are ok? I don't know about the Aptiva, but many older pc's support static speakers, which many sound cards do not. Have you tried switching speakers - static to dynamic or vice-versa?

Aptiva soundcards with the crystal chipset have to be initialized in dos before they work in windows. There should be a line in your autoexec.bat file that does this. I used to know this line but my Aptiva died in Feb. and I have forgotten it.

...but I thought he wasn't using the Aptiva sound????
Shouldn't an "add-on" card install and work?

I am using a replacement sound card. I have tried alternate speakers, alternate sound cards, alternate slots anything I could think of.

BTW Thanks for the replies
