Is this cpu purely 64 bit or is it emulated? Are the new intels pure 64 bit? Thanks |

I think 64 bit Support means that is can run 64 bit processes but it is backwards compatible. A 64 bit processor is handy if you want to run 64 bit vista or xp but all processors now days have 64 bit support.
I hope i helped at all |

Thanks dogdude16
What i meant was is that processor a PURE 64 bit chip like the athlon 64 line. I remember a while back i don'think intels chips were actually 64 bit they were emulated. Am i right or wrong? |

I think it is still emulated by Intel's EM64T technonlogy but I may be wrong.

That stands fro Extended Memory Technology and it's part of the chip architecture.

A lot of weasle words to me. If it's a 64 bit CPU, why not simple state it's a 64 bit CPU??? I think that omission is a very big statement in and of itself. |

So how does intels 64 bit chips compare with amd64 running in 64 bit mode for example?

All chips now out are based on 32 bit architecture, no surprises there,.
64 bit is an extension of that architecture, no surprises there either. You enhance the memory architecture to get it to do that and the chip is backwards compatible with 32 bit programs. To put it another way, you can run 32 bit programs on a cpu that can handle 64 bit processing. So XP runs just fine. You cannot, however, run 64 bit programs on a 32 bit processor. So, even if you wanted to, you cannot run Vista 64 on that XP Athlon. Quote:
edit : The point is that it's a hardware change. Last edited by pam123; 11-25-2007 at 04:06 PM. |

I interpret Spearball's question as: Is it a 32 bit CPU that can "do" 64 bit instructions? Or is it a 64 bit that can do 32 bit?
My point is that in the few Intel articles I've read, I've never seen it stated as a 64 bit CPU. They always say stuff like (from above): " Intel®64 is an extension to Intel's processors based on the IA-32 architecture." To me that is saying it is a 32 bit that can do 64 bit stuff... |

OK you need this : http://www.intel.com/technology/arch...el64/index.htm
If you want download the PDF's and read about the hardware changes. It's a 64 bit processor that can do 32 bit instructions. |
